Answer :-

a + 1/a = 2√10

Explanation :-

Given :-

a² - 6a - 1 = 0

To find :-

a + 1/a

Solution :-

First find the value of a - 1/a

a² - 6a - 1 = 0

⇒ a² - 6a = 1

⇒ a(a - 6) = 1

⇒ a - 6 = 1/a

⇒ a - 6 - 1/a = 0

⇒ a - 1/a = 6

Therefore a - 1/a = 6

There is an identity to find a + 1/a when a - 1/a is known to us

i.e, (a + 1/a)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4

Here a - 1/a = 6

By substituting the values

⇒ (a + 1/a)² - (6)² = 4

⇒ (a + 1/a)² - 36 = 4

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = 4 + 36

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = 40

⇒ a + 1/a = √40

⇒ a + 1/a = √4(√10)

⇒ a + 1/a = 2(√10)

⇒ a + 1/a = 2√10

Therefore a + 1/a = 2√10

Verification :-

(a + 1/a)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4

⇒ (2√10)² - (6)² = 4

⇒ 2²(√10)² - 36 = 4

⇒ 4(10) - 36 = 4

⇒ 40 - 36 = 4

⇒ 4 = 4

Identity used :-

• (a + 1/a)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4
