A 2 kg ball is moving at a speed of 4 m/s toward a ball of the same mass at rest. They both stick together after the collision. What is the velocity of the two ball system and what type of collision is it?

Answer:

total initial momentum = m1×v1 + m2×v2 = 2×3+3×0 = 6 kgm/s

momentum conserved, hence final momentum 6 = (m1+m2)×v; v = 6/(2+3) = 1.2 m/s

final kinetic energy = (1/2)(m1+m2)v2 =(1/2)×5×1.2×1.2 = 3.6 kgm/s

loss in kinetic energy = 6-3.6 = 2.4 kgm/s
