answer : option (a) 16 volts

explanation :- Here you should understand that, an alternating current is applied to circuit consisting of a resistance and a coil. here coil can be assumed \textbf{inductor}

hence, L - R combination of circuit is given .

The voltage across a L - R combination is given by V^2=V_R^2+V_L^2

where V = 20 volts , V_R = 12volts

so, V_L=\sqrt{V^2-V_R^2}=\sqrt{20^2-12^2}

= √{400 - 144} volts

= √256 volts = 16 volts

hence, the voltage across the coil is 16 volts .
