The final temperature of the mixture is 0°C .

Given : A 2kg ice is at -2 degrees celcius is mixed with 0.5kg of water at 10 degrees celcius.

To find : The final temperature of the mixture when thermal equilibrium is reached.

solution : heat required to melt the ice, H₁ = ms₁∆T + mLf

= 2kg × 2100 J/Kg/°C × {0 - (-2°C)} + 2kg × 3.35 × 10^5 J/kg

= 8400 J + 6.7 × 10^5 J

= 8400 J + 670000 J

= 678400 J

heat lost by water , H₂ = ms₂∆T

= 0.5 kg × 4200 J/Kg/°C × (10°C - 0°C)

= 21000 J

here we see H₁ >> H₂

it means ice doesn't melt completely and hence temperature of the mixture is 0°C.
