A 4-pole and 3-phase induction motor operates from a supply whose frequency
is 50 Hz.
Calculate (i) the speed at which magnetic field of the stator is rotating.
(ii) determine the percentage slip if rotor is rotating at 1440 rpm.

Solution:

A 4-pole and 3-phase induction motor operates from a supply whose frequency is 50 Hz.

Number of poles = 4

frequency = 50 Hz

Ns  - Synchronous Speed  =   120  * frequency / Number of poles

= 120 * 50 / 4

= 1500 rpm

the speed at which magnetic field of the stator is rotating. = 1500 rpm

Slip %  =  100 * (Ns  - rotor Speed)/Ns

= 100 ( 1500 - 1440)/1500

= 60/15

=4

Slip %  = 4
