A 5 kg rubber ball is released from a height of 10 m. and is allowed to bounce . After the ball strikes the ground, 10% of the balls kinetic energy is lost in the collision. What is the height of the ball after the height of the ball after the first bounce

Explanation:

Let the ball be dropped from height h

Its initial potential energy will be equal to mgh

Now it loses 10% of its energy due to air resistance. Thus its energy at the bottom = 0.9(mgh)

It again loses 10% energy due to collision with ground. Thus energy for rebound = 0.9x0.9 = 0.81(mgh)

Now during rebound, it moves upward again, thus encountering air drag. Loss of energy is 10% again. Thus net energy = 0.9x0.81= 0.729(mgh)

Thus the ball will bounce back upto 0.729h
