A 5g sample of impure magnesium carbonate is reacted with an excess of hydrochloric acid according to the following equation.
MgCO3 + HCl  MgCl2 + H2O + CO2
Design an investigation to check the purity of magnesium carbonate in the given sample. (You only need to include the apparatus, procedure and steps you will follow to calculate the %purity)

Answer:

given =  5g impure magnesium

              MgCO3 + HCl  MgCl2 + H2O + CO2

to find =  calculate the %purity

solution:-

            MgCO3 + HCl  MgCl2 + H2O + CO2

we have to find mole 1st ,

1 mole MgCO3 =  1 mole CO2

so, for 1.12l of CO2 =  1.12/ 22.4 = 0.05moles.

mass of MgCO3 = 0.05 X   84 gm ........ (mass of MgCO3)

                           = 4.2 gm

% of MgCO3 in mixture

= 4.2 / 5 X 100 =   84%

so, the % of MgCO3 in mixture is 84%
