Given:

Sand volume = 600 cm3

Moist sand weight = 1010 gm

Dry weight of the sand = 918 gm

Specific gravity G = 2.69

Density of water (Dw) = 1 gm/cm3.

Solution:

Density of moist sand (Dm) = Mass /Volume = 1010 / 600 =  1.683 gm /cm3

Density of dry sand (Ds) = 918 / 600 = 1.53 gm / cm3

We know that,

Density of dry sand (Ds)=  Specific gravity * density of water (Dw) / (1+ void ratio)

Ds = G * Dw / ( 1+ e)

So,

e = (G * Dw / Ds) - 1

e = (2.67 * 1.53 / 1 ) -1 =  0.745

Void ratio = 0.745
