Explanation:

Given A 7 gram bullet travelling horizontally at 380 m/s, pierces into your 2kg copy of Halliday, Resnick and Walker sitting on your table. The table and book have a coefficient of kinetic friction of k=0.3.Find the distance, in meters, that the book and bullet will slide on the table before coming to rest

  • So conservation of momentum on the bullet and book will be
  •                               m1v1 = m2v2
  • So mass of bullet = m1 = 7/1000 kg
  • Velocity of bullet = V1 = 380 m/s
  • Mass of book = m2 = 2 kg
  • Velocity of book = v
  •       So we get
  •                             7/1000 x 380 = 2 x v2
  •                                   V2 = 266 / 200
  •                                   V2 = 1.33 m/s
  • Now during the resistance of motion of book there is friction
  •               So a = - µg
  •                        = - 0.3 x 10
  •                    A = - 3 m/s^2
  • Now we have Newton’s second law of motion
  •                       V^2 = u^2 – 2aS
  •                       0 = (1.33)^2 – 2 x 3 x S (final velocity v = 0)
  •                      6S = 1.7689
  •            Or S = 1.7689 / 6
  •           Or S = 0.2948 m
