       length of wire = 70 cm ----------------- (given)

let, one piece be ------------ x

∴ length of the other piece = 2x/5

so,   ⇒  x/1 + 2x/5 = 70

---------LCM of 1 and 5 = 5----------

       ⇒  (5x+2x)/5 = 70

       ⇒      5x + 2x = 70 × 5

       ⇒               7x = 350

       ⇒                  x = 350/7

       ⇒                  x = 50 cm

       length of one wire = x = 50cm

     length of other wire = 2x/5 = 20cm

∴ length of shorter piece is 20cm
