If a(a+b)=36 so a^2+ab=2 and if b(a+b)=64 so ab+b^2=64. See it carefully you will find an identity between them which is (a+b)^2=100
so a+b=10 by transposing the sq. to the RHS.
We have got the value of a+b so by substituting it value to the question we get a(10)=36 and b(10)=64. Now transpose 10 to the RHS and we will get a=3.6 and b=6.4 .
According to question we have to find the value of a-b which is equal to 3.6-6.4=-2.8 which is your answer.
