"A and B can do a piece of work in 30 days. It means that both of them can do 1/40th of the work in one day. In the 8 days that they worked together they had done 8/40 or 1/5th of the work. The remaining 4/5th of the work was done by B in 36 days. So B alone can do the same work (whole) in (5/4)*36 = 45 days.
"So B does 1/45th of the work in a day. So A alone can do (1/40)-(1/45) = 1/360th part of the work in a day so he will take 360 days to do the work, working alone.
