1.Oliver and alternate young men take out straws to see who will request more gruel. They are on the whole starving and not given enough edibles. In this way, obviously, Oliver draws the small straw and is compelled to request for more.
2.The primary reason that Oliver asks for more gruel (which is similar to oatmeal) is because he is hungry. The board members of the workhouse where Oliver lives meet and decide that "the poor people like" the room and board they receive.
3.After finishing his gruel that evening, he approaches the master and asks for more. The master is shocked, strikes a blow at Oliver and calls for Mr. Bumble.
