(a)Applied Ohm’s law to obtain the relation for combined resistance when three resistors R1, R2 and R3 are connected in series. (b) Write any three difference between the series and parallel combination of resistance. (c) A set of ‘n’ identical resistors each resistance R are connected in series and the effective resistance is found to be ‘X’. When these are connected in parallel, the effective resistance is found to be ‘Y’. Find the ratio of X and Y.

Answer:

R1+R2+R3

1/R1+1/R2+1/R3

Explanation:

In Series combination of resistances, the second end to each resistance is connected to the first end of the next resistance and so on.

In a series combination of resistances, the current flowing through each resistance will be the same and will be equal to the current supplied by the battery. As resistance is different and the current flowing through each resistance is the same, hence potential differences across different resistances will be different.

V=V1+V2+V3

I=IR1+IR2+IR3R=R1+R2+R3

Parallel-

1/R1+1/R2+1/R3

where v is constant in derivation
