ANSWER
___________________________

a + b = 20
ab = 40

Using identity,
(a + b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab

(a + b)^2 = 20^2

=> a^2 + b^2 + 2ab = 400

=> a^2 + b^2 + 2 × 40 = 400

=> a^2 + b^2 = 400 - 80

=> a^2 + b^2 = 320

_____________________________

ANSWER = a square + b square = 320
