Question :- if a² = b² + c² in a triangle with sides a, b and c, then what is the angle opposite to side a ?
Solution :-
we know that,
- The Converse of Pythagoras theorem statement says that if the square of the length of the longest side of a triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides of a triangle, then the triangle is known to be a right triangle.
- The side opposite to the right angle is the longest side of the triangle .
given that,
- a, b and c are sides of a ∆ .
and,
→ a² = b² + c²
→ (longest side)² = sum of square of other two sides of ∆
→ a² = b² + c².
therefore, we can conclude that, the given ∆ is a right angled ∆ with longest side as a .
hence,
→ Angle opposite to longest side of a right angled ∆ = 90° (Ans.)
