Equation of motion.

v = u + at

v is the final velocity. u is the initial velocity (40 m/s) & t is 2 s. a is the acceleration.

v = 40 + (-10 x 2)

v = 20 m/s

The velocity is 20 m/s upwards.

The value of -g is substituted for a as the object is moving against gravity.
