A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 49 m/s.

What is the maximum height reached by the ball?

How long will the ball spend in the air?

Answer:

Initial Velocity (u) = 49 m/s

Final Velocity (v) = 0 m/s

Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 9.8 m/s² (value becomes negative if movement direction is upwards)

v² = u²-2gh (h stands for height)

= 0² = (49)² - 2(9.8h)

= 0 = 2401 - 19.6h

= 19.6h = 2401

= h = 122.5 m or, 0.122 km

Time spent in air = v = u-gt

= 0 = 49-9.8t

= 9.8t = 49

= t = 5s

So, as the ball takes 5s to go up, we can assume that it shall take 5s to reach the ground due to constant acceleration due to gravity.

So, Total Time of the ball spent in air = (5+5) s

= 10 s

Hope this helps.
