Let the velocity with the ball is thrown upwards be v m/s.

Then the maximum height achieved => H = v^2/2g

Now it is given that,

at one-third of max. height v = 8 m/s.

H/3 =64/2*g

H =32*3/g => 9.6 m

v = > root(2gH) => root(2*10*9.6) => root(192) => 13.85 m/s
