A balloon is connected to a meteorological station by a cable of length 200 metres inclined at 60° to the horizontal. determine the height of the balloon from the ground (assume that there is no slac.k in the cable. given √3 = 1.73).

Let C be the position of the meteorological station, B the position of the balloon and CB be the cable. let the height of the balloon from the ground be AB = h metres
In right angle ∆ CAB, AB/BC = sin 60°
=> h/200 = √3/2
=> h = √3/2×200
= 100 × 1.73
= 173 m
Hence, the height of the balloon above the ground is 173 m.
