Since, from the question we get that the when the ball is dropped from the height of 40 meter then its speed was 10 m/s and the acceleration due to gravity will be -g=-10 m/s^2.

So, the distance traveled by the balloon will be S=v^2/2g which will be 10*10/2*10, on solving we will get the value of S=5. After the balloon will reach the zero velocity then the distance it will have traveled will be 40+5 = 45 m. So, the balloons total distance traveled is 45+5=50 m.
