1) Tie a string in middle part of the bar magnet and suspend it freely
2)The magnet will move a little bit allow it to come at rest
3)The north pole of magnet will face the north direction while the south pole will face the south direction

a magnetic compass always points towards the North South direction so a magnetic compass can be used to determine the polarity of a magnet
