SOLUTION

GIVEN

A bicycle has a momentum of 24 kg•m/s.

TO DETERMINE

The momentum would the bicycle have if it had the same mass and was moving with twice the speed

EVALUATION

Let initially mass = M kg and speed = V m/s

Then momentum = MV kg•m/s

So by the given condition

MV = 24 - - - - - - (1)

Now it is given that the it has same mass and was moving with twice the speed

Thus mass = M kg and speed = 2V m/s

Hence the new momentum

= M × 2V kg•m/s

= 2MV kg•m/s

= 2 × 24 kg•m/s

= 48 kg•m/s
