Birds can sit on power lines and not get electric shocks because the electricity is always looking for a way to get to the ground. The birds are not touching the ground or anything in contact with the ground, so the electricity will stay in the power line .

A bird sitting on a high power electric line is still safe because of two reasons :

1. The bird sitting on power line is not touching the ground and thus there is no potential difference. Since, current can only flow when there is potential difference therefore there is no current through the bird.

2. The bird sitting on power line can still get a shock if:

  • The two legs of the bird is separated by some considerable distance.

  • When this happens there is potential difference between the two legs of the bird and current flows and it gets shock.

  • We often see birds getting electrocuted due to this.

Tip : Whenever there is electric current on ground never walk normally because you will get shock. Always hop keeping both legs together so that no potential difference is created.
