A block of mass 10 kg is suspended from two light spring balances, as shown in the figure.
Figure
(a) Both the scales will read 10 kg.
(b) Both the scales will read 5 kg.
(c) The upper scale will read 10 kg and the lower zero.
(d) The readings may be anything but their sums will be 10 kg.

A block of mass 10 kg is suspended from two light spring balance.

  • Now since there is no given figure we assume that the block of mass is suspended by two light spring balances on either side of the block.
  • The mass of the block is 10 kg. So, if the two spring balances are attached side on either side of the block and those two spring balances are ideal then both should show readings as 5 kg.
  • It is because the mass of the block gets distributed to both the spring balances.
  • And also the sum of the readings will give the 10 kg, which is the mass of the block.

Therefore both the scales will read 5 kg.

Both scales will read 10 kg.

Option (A) is correct.

Explanation:

  • As the 10 kg is acting toward earth therefore it will experience 10 gravitational force.
  • The spring will also apply a force as the spring constant is k.
  • The spring force will depend on the elongation of the spring.
  • The spring 1 will exert k1x1 downwards and spring 2 will exert k2x2 in the upward direction.

As the spring balances are light, so tension in both the spring will be same and equal to weight of block suspended. Therefore both the scales will read 10 kg.
