Answer:

speed of water = 6km/hr

speed of upstream = (6-v)

speed of downstream = (6+v)

In the case of downstream

t1 =40/(6+v)

In the case of upstream

t2 =40/(6-v)

40/(6+v) = 40/(6-v) ×3

1/(6+v) = 3/(6-v)

6-v = 18+3v

6-v-18-3v = 0

12 - 4v = 0

-4v = -12

v = 12/4

v = 3

3km/hr
