Let the total distance between two points be 2x.
Let it takes t sec to cover 1st half and t' to cover 2nd half of the total distance.
t = x/u ...(i)
t' = x/v ...(ii)
Average speed = Total distance / Total time
= ( 2x )/( t+t' ) = 2uv/(u+v)=2×40×60/40+60=4800/100=48m/s
