It is taken from akash national talent hunt exam 2018 class 9, as the body is thrown vertically upwards its final velocity will become zero (as it will come to rest) at the highest point, so v = 0

By applying 3rd eq. of kinematics,

v^2 - u^2 = 2as

In case of free fall or throw, it becomes-

v^2 - u^2 = 2gh

Substituting the values of v, g and h we've-

0 - u^2 = 2(-10)(500) [g is taken as -ve because the ball is accelerating against gravity]

u = √10000 [-ve sign cancel out from both sides]

u = 100 ms^-1
