we know that..

distance = actual length coverd by an object

displacement = minimum length covered by an object

first journey : body moves A to B

distance = AB = 10m ( actual length of covered by body is AB )

displacement = AB = 10m ( minimum length covered by body from A to B is AB )

second journey : body moves from B to A

distance = AB + BA = 10+10

=> distance = 20m

when body moves from B to A then..length is negative for finding displacement..

displacement = AB + (-BA) = 10-10 = 0

=> displacement = 0

hence,

  • distance in first case = 10m
  • distance in second case = 20m
  • displacement in first case = 10m
  • displacement in second case = 0m
