In physics, terminology is important. Displacement isn’t the same as distance, and velocity isn’t the same as speed.

The distance of the particle is how far it traveled, you simply add up how far it
went—3m+4m—and you find the particle traveled a total of 7m.

Displacement =
 \sqrt{ {4 }^{2} +  {3}^{2}  }   \\  \sqrt{16 + 9}  \\  \sqrt{25} \\  \ \sqrt{5 \times 5}   \\  = 5 m
