A book shelf in a library is 3 1/2 feet long. Each book in that shelf was 5/8 inch wide.How many books can be put in that shelf? (Hint: converting unit 3 1/2×12 inch/feet =42 inch)

(3 1/2 ft.) / 5/8 in.

 

both values must be in same increments; change feet to inches

 

3 1/2 ft = 7/2 ft

 

(7/2) 12/1 = 42 in.

 

Then:  42 / (5/8)

 

          42 (8/5)

 

          336/5

 

          67 1/5 

 

you can stack 67 books
