A bottle contains 255 coins 1/3 of the coins are 1 pound coins 110 of the coins are 50p coins the rest of the coins are 20p coins work out the total value of the coins contained in the bottle

Given :

Number of coins = 255

Part  of coins for 1 pound = \dfrac{1}{3}

Part of coins for 50 p coins = \dfrac{1}{10}

Part of coins for 20 p coins is given by:

1-(\dfrac{1}{3}+\dfrac{1}{10})\\\\=1-(\dfrac{10+3}{30})\\\\=1-\dfrac{13}{30}\\\\=\dfrac{30-13}{30}\\\\=\dfrac{17}{30}

To find :

The total value of the coins = ?

Solution :

\text{Number of Re. 1} = \dfrac{1}{3}\times 255=85

Number of 50p = \dfrac{1}{10}\times 255=25.5

Number of 20p = \dfrac{17}{30}\times 255=144.5

So, the total value of the coins would be

85+25.5\times \dfrac{1}{2}+144.5\times \dfrac{1}{5}\\\\=85+17.75+28.9\\\\=131.65

Hence, the total value of the coins contained in the bottle is Rs. 131.65.
