A boy covers a distance of 20 km in 2 and 1/2 hours, partly on foot at the rate of 5 km/h and partly on bicycle at the rate of 10 km/h. Find the distance covered on foot.

let the boy covered x km on foot

so he covered (20-x) km on by cycle

time taken to cover x km on foot at the rate of 5 km /hour is x/5 hours

similarly time taken to cover (20-x) km on bicycle at the rate of 10 km/ hour is (20-x)/10

so,

x/5+(20-x)/10=2 1/2

=> {2x+(20-x)}/10=5/2

=> 2x+20-x=25

=> x=25-20

=> x=5

so the boy covered 5 km on foot
