ADA deficiency stands for Adenosine deaminase deficiency. Adenosine is present in the lymphocytes and is important for the immune system. ADA deficiency is an inheritable disorder that causes damages the immune system, leading to severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). SCID causes the affected people to lose all their immunity towards viruses, bacteria, and fungi, and thereby keep falling ill very frequently.

Most of the symptoms of SCID include frequent
severe respiratory infections, poor and slow growth in infants, eczema-like rashes, recurrent thrush, chronic diarrhea, etc.

The treatment methods include -

1. Gene therapy - Insertion of a normal ADA gene copy into the T-cells of the patients themselves and injecting them into the patients.

2. For the treatment of ADA-SCID, the most reliable method is Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), which starts with the PEG-ADA administration.

3.
Bone marrow transplant (BMT) - The new bone marrow replaces the defective immune cells with new and healthy immune cells from a healthy donor.

4.
Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT): This method replaces the ADA enzyme which is missing and it allows the regular and proper functioning of the immune system.
