A boy introduced a red hot charcoal into a gas jar and covered it with a glass lid so as to collect the gas evolved (i)How will he find the nature of the gas? (ii) Write a word equation representing the formation of gas evolved.

i) The gas evolved will put off the red-hot charcoal in the gas jar
ii) carbon + Oxygen = carbon oxide in case of a charcoal cooking gas, the carbon oxide will further react with oxygen to produce carbon IV oxide which also extinguishes fire.

a) The gas so collected can be made to pass through lime water. The lime water will turn milky because the gas so formed is carbon dioxide by the reaction of carbon (red charcoal) and oxygen.

b) Equation:

Carbon (C) + Oxygen (O2) → Carbon dioxide (CO2)
