Given data :

  • A boy is trying to catch fish sitting on a pillar of height of 12 m from the surface of the water.
  • A big fish is at a horizontal distance of 5 m from the pillar.

To find : What should be the length of his string to get that fish ?

Solution : Let, BC be the pillar. which is perpendicular to the base AC, which is a horizontal distance from pillar. Let, AB be the string.

Now, according to given

⟹ BC = 12 m

⟹ AC = 5 m

⟹ AB = ?

Now, to find length of string we use formula of : Pythagorus theorem

⟹ (Hypo)² = (1st side)² + (2cd side)²

According to assumption and figure

⟹ (AB)² = (BC)² + (AC)²

⟹ (AB)² = (12)² + (5)²

⟹ (AB)² = 144 + 25

⟹ (AB)² = 169

⟹ AB = √169

⟹ AB = 13 m

Answer : Hence, length of string 13 m. {option ( 2 ). 13 m}
