A boy of mass 60 kg jumps off a truck of mass 140 kg travelling at 7.5 m/s. If the boy runs towards the truck with a velocity of 2.5 m/s, calculate the velocity of the truck the moment the boy jumped off

Initial momentum = Final momentum

He is asking us to find out the velocity after he jumps off the truck.

That will be the same as the common velocity = the velocity of both the truck as well as the boy.

now

Initial momentum = (60×2.5) + (140×7.5)

= 150 + 1050

= 1200 kgm/s

Final momentum=(60+140)V

= 200V kgm/s

So on equating..

200V = 1200

V = 1200/200 = 6 m/s ..ans..

Hence the velocity after he jumps off the truck will be 6 m/s.
