we know that average speed is the ratio of total distance travelled to that of total time taken, so total distance the boy travelled is 10 + 12 = 22

time taken for the first 10 kms is 10/12hr

time taken for the next 12 kms is 12/10hr

total time taken = 10/12 + 12/10 = 61/30hr

average speed = 22*30/61 = 10.8196 km/hr
