Given :  a boy throws a coin .

he is to receive two rupees for getting a tail and

rupees 10 for getting a head.

To Find : his expectation

Solution:

Expected Value  =  ∑ ( probability  * Value )

 ∑ P(x).E(x)

Probability of getting Head  P(H)  = Probability of Getting Tail P(T) = 1/2

E(H)  = 10 Rs  , E (T)  = 2 Rs

Expected money for tail   = P(T)E (T)   = (1/2) 2  = 1  Rs

Expected money for Head =  P(H) E(H)  = (1/2) 10  = 5  Rs

Total expected Value  = P(T)E (T) +   P(H) E(H)

1 + 5 = 6 Rs

Hence his expectation is Rs 6
