A Brave and Startling Truth is a poem written by Maya Angelou on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.
Angelou calls the earth a small lonely planet inhabited by people. The area occupied by people is quite small and negligible compared to the rest of the universe. She says that the day is not far off when people will release their closed fists and welcome new thoughts. They will also indulge in less violence and seek liberation from it while remaining calm towards each other.
She continues to illustrate the steps to be taken for both the elderly and children to have a peaceful life on earth. The violence over various religions must end and the barricade of differences must be destroyed. People can achieve their full potential only if they give up their hatred for one another. -Liberation, equality, and freedom can be easily achieved through love.
