Paradip, June 26: A 15-year-old girl ran away from home and sought police help as her parents wanted to get her married to a man twice her age.
The girl had recently passed the high school certificate examination. Her parents had fixed her marriage to a 35-year-old differently-abled man without her consent. The pre-wedding rituals were held last week. The wedding was to be solemnised after the holy month of Ramazan.
The girl, a native of Budhapada village, had not attained marriageable age and was insistent on continuing studies in college. When she approached the police recently, they took the help of the district child welfare committee to ensure that the child marriage is stopped.
"She was upset about her parents wanting to get her married at such a young age and asked for our help. We sought help from the child welfare committee," said inspector of Jagatsinghpur police station Debendra Mallik.
