A bread piece tastes sweet while it is being swallowed. We know that bread contains starch. Starch is a molecule that plants make in order to store sugar. It is a long chain of glucose When we chew the food, the saliva in our mouth breaks down the starch into simpler glucose or maltose. Although starch is not sweet but the glucose is. Thus, a piece of bread tastes sweet when chewed for a while.
