Nutritional Disorders : Nutritional disorders are caused by inadequate intake of proteins, vitamins and minerals in the diet. The following are some of the important nutritional disorders.

1. PEM : Protein Energy Malnutrition is seen in children whose diet is inadequate in proteins, vitamins and minerals.

2. Kwashiorkor :
-> It is a protein deficiency disorder.
-> Commonly affects children and infants between 1 and 3 years.
>> Symptoms - Underweight, stunted growth, poor brain development, loss of appetite, anaemia, protruding belly, slender legs, bulging eyes, oedema of lower legs and face, change in the skin and hair colour.
>> Causes - Protein deficient or inadequate diet due to ignorance, poverty, infections such as diarrhea, measles, respiratory diseases, intestinal worms, etc.

3. Marasmus: Prolonged protein-energy malnutrition. Usually affects children below one year of age.
>> Symptoms -
Impaired physical growth and retarded mental development,
Loss of subcutaneous fat. Prominent ribs,
Thin limbs, dry and wrinkled skin,
Emaciation and loss of weight,
Diarrhoea,
No oedema,
World's leading cause of infant's death.

>> Causes -
Simultaneous deficiency of proteins and total food calorie value. Early termination of breast feeding. Food deficient in calories and proteins.

4. Vomiting:
-> Reverse peristaltic movement causing throwing of the stomach contents out of the mouth is called vomiting.
-> Vomiting is associated with nausea.
-> Nonvital vomiting center in the medulla oblongata controls vomiting.

5. Diarrhoea :
-> A loose watery stool for more than 3 times in a day is diarrhoea.
-> It may lead to dehydration.
