Mesophyll cells are present in the chloroplast of the leaves where the process of photosynthesis takes palce . They are present in the outer surface of the chloroplast so that they can easily trap sunlight for the process of photosynthesis

Mesophyll cells can be found in the cross-section of a leaf. There are two types of mesopyhll cells: the spongy mesopyhll cells and the palisade mesophyll cells. They contain chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight and carry out photosynthesis. Palisade mesophyll cells are align at the top of the cross-section of a lead whereas the spongy cells are located below them. Palisade cells are arranged neatly whereas the spongy cells are arranged disorderly which forms air pocket known as air chambers which trap air. Because palisade cells are arranged neatly at the top, hence the top of the leaf always has a darker shade of green compared to the bottom of the leaf.
