Set amidst the mines of Sweden, Rattrap is the story written by Selma Lagerlof. Selling around small rattraps, a rattrap peddler was a poor fellow who begged for the materials from big farm and stores. He led a lonely life and resorted to begging sometimes. He had no home and shelter and that world has never been kind to him. He thought of the world as a rattrap wherein when anyone touched the rattrap it traped their hand and amuses himself by thinking of such people. One night in December he knocks at the cottage door for shelter. The owner of the cottage was a lonely crofter. He welcomes the peddler and has him tobacco to smoke and hot porridge to eat. The crofter finds someone to talk and is generous towards the peddler. The crofter shares about the payment he received from the previous month, amounting to thirty Kronor and shows the money to the peddler. The crofter instead of putting the money in a pouch he hung it on the window frame.
Next day while the crofter left locking the cottage, the peddler was lured to steal thirty kronor and smashes the window pane. He walked along the woods and found forest as a rat trap as he moved in circles. While he gave up he heard sound from distant and follows the sound. He opened the gate of Ramsjo ironwork and the owner of ironwork analyses him to be his old regimental comrades, Captain Von Stable. The owner offers the peddler to come home but peddler being alert declines the offer and later ironmaster asks his daughter Edla to bring the peddler home. As Edla approaches, he agrees to go and feels guilty about stealing the money.
The ironmaster is ecstatic about his friend and feeds him. Also, he asks his servant to make him clean, while the peddler is shaved and bathed the ironmaster realizes that it was not Captain Von Stable. He is disappointed with such deceive act and thoughts of having him to the sheriff. Hence, the peddler was asked to leave. Edla doesn't like the behavior of her father and pursues her father to let the peddler stay for Christmas. While the next day at the church Edla and ironmaster learn that the peddler is a thief because of which Edla feels to be heated and while they return home they saw that nothing has been stolen. The peddler leaves behind a silver rattrap and the Crofter's money with a letter and signed a letter as Captain Von stable.
