Question :
A bulb is rated 220 volt and 100 watt when it is operated on 110 volt the power consumed will be ?

Answer :

Given,
Supply Voltage of the bulb V = 220 V
Power Consumed by the Bulb P = 100 Watt

\underline{\large{\textbf{Step-1}}} :
Find the Resistance of the bulb (i.e., when current flows across it)

Using the relation,
P = \dfrac{V^{2}}{R}

\implies R = \dfrac{V^{2}}{P}

Substituting Values

\implies R = \dfrac{220^{2}}{100}

\implies R = \dfrac{48400}{100}

\implies R = 484 \ohmega

Resistance of the bulb when Supply Voltage is 220 V is 484 ohms

\underline{\large{\textbf{Step-2}}} :
Find the Power consumed by the bulb when Supply Voltage is 110 V.

It is to be noted that,
Though the Supply Voltage is decreased, the resistance of the bulb remains constant.

So, Using the relation,

P = \dfrac{V^{2}}{R}

Substituting Values

\implies P = \dfrac{110^{2}}{484}

\implies P = \dfrac{12100}{484}

\implies P = 25\: W

Therefore,
Power consumed by the bulb when Supply Voltage is 110 V is 25 W
