From the Question,

  • Initial Velocity,u = 20 m/s

  • Distance,s = 10 cm = 1/10 m

To find

Retardation of the bullet

After the bullet strikes the target it starts losing velocity,it comes to rest » v = 0 m/s

Using the Relation,

 \huge{ \boxed{ \boxed{ \sf{ {v}^{2}  -  {u}^{2}  = 2as}}}}

Substituting the values,we get :

 \hookrightarrow \:  \sf{ {0}^{2}  -  {20}^{2}  = 2 \times  \dfrac{1}{10} \times   a} \\  \\   \hookrightarrow \:  \sf{ - 400 =  \dfrac{a}{5} } \\  \\  \hookrightarrow \:  \sf{a =  - 400 \times 5} \\  \\  \huge{ \hookrightarrow \:  \boxed{ \boxed{ \sf{a =  - 2 \times  {10}^{3} \: m {s}^{ - 2} }}}}
