Given,

A bullet of mass 10g fired with a velocity of 60m/s and the mass of gun was 2kg.

To Find,

The recoil velocity of the gun.

Solution,

1) Bullet

m1 = 10 g = 0.01kg.

u1 = 0

v1 = 60 m/s

2) Gun

m2 = 2 kg

u2 = 0

v2 = (to be found)

We know that,

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2

[ As both u1 & u2 are 0, the RHS is as follows]

0 = (0.01 x 60) + (2 x v2)

0 = 0.6 + 2v2

v2 = -0.3 m/s.

Therefore the recoil velocity of the gun is -0.3 m/s.
