A bullet of mass 35 g is fired from a rifle of mass 5 kg. Imagine that no
other forces are acting on the system. If the bullet travels with a velocity of
5 m/s, what will be the recoil velocity of the rifle?

Answer:

m= 35g = 0.035 kg

M= 5 kg

v = 5m/s

V =?

By the laws of conservation of momentum, the formula here is

mv = -MV

There fire we substitute all of these values,

0.035 x 5 = -5 x V

V = (0.035 x 5)/ -5

V = -0.035 m/s

the recoil velocity is 0.035 m/s

Hope this helps
