A bullet of mass 50g moving with an initial velocity 100m s-1 ,strikes a wodden block and comes to rest after penetrating a distance 2cm in it. Calculate:
(i)initial momentum of the bullet
(ii) final momentum of the bullet
(iii) retardation caused by the wodden block

Mass of bullet= 50g =0.05 kg
Initial velocity of bullet=100m/s
(i) momentum (p)=mu
Therefore, initial momentum = 0.05•100=5kgm/s
(ii) final velocity of bullet=0
Therefore, p= mv = 0.05•0=0
(iii) we know that, 2as=v (square)-u (square)
Here, s= 0.02m
Therefore, 2•a•0.02=0(square)-100(square)
0.04•a= 0-10000
a= 10000/0.04= -250000
Retardation = -250000
(iv) resistive force (F)= m•-a
Therefore, F= 0.05•(-250000)= -12500
